The kids were excited to see the changes in her! The oldest girl said to me "Wait here, I have something to show you." She went off and came back a few minutes later with another doll, the sister doll from 30+ years ago. She held her doll up next to the one I had just restored and said "wow, look at the difference!" I couldn't possibly leave her there, looking like that so I offered to fix up her doll too, as an early birthday gift.
They also sent along with me an old hat that goes with the first doll I restored. I told them I could fix the hole in it. The little girl said "my doll doesn't have her hat anymore, but it's ok because she has this ribbon. The "ribbon" was a frayed scrap of fabric. What a sweetheart.

Her hair is in similar condition as the first doll. It's mostly one long strand but there isn't quite as much yarn on this one. Still reusable.

Her nightgown needed some repairs too.

I guess I forgot to take pictures of the old mob cap while I was repairing it. It was double layered and as I was taking it apart to mend the hole I decided it was fate that it could to be made into two hats for the two sister dolls. As luck would have it, I had removed a small section of the first nightgown to eliminate a rust stained piece. That scrap was enough to patch both pieces of the hat that had a large hole in the edge. Deal sealed for two hats. I lined them with white quilting cotton and used the original red ribbons on them. One ribbon from this nightgown and one from the original hat.

After. Looking pretty as a picture. I just love making old loved dolls look fabulous again. I gave her a bath and repaired her nightgown. The elastic was gone from one sleeve cuff and there were a few holes to mend. She also had a hole in her leg that needed mending. Fresh ribbons in her hair and on her nightgown finish her restoration.
Thanks for looking!Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462230155464872978noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8530614299928704144.post-60105850937288573122012-10-11T15:14:00.001-05:002012-10-11T15:14:12.421-05:00Last week of our farm share for the season, and a little lady visits. On Tuesday my last week of farm share was delivered. I share it with neighbors and they are kind enough to sort and deliver to me. This week my neighbor also brought over this little lady in hopes I could fix her up. Her grandma had made the doll for her sister 30+ years ago and she'd been left at the family home with a lot of other childhood toys. The sister asked for this doll specifically out of everything and my neighbor thought she would have said no if she'd seen her in the condition she was in. I was happy to fix her up, she's a charming doll.

This is how she came to me. The long strand of yarn hair gave me hope that I could restore her with what was left of her original hair. I think it is some kind of mohair, definitely worth saving.

The hair was very tangled, but as luck would have it the big tangle was one long piece! Perfect for cutting lengths for a wig. It took me a couple of hours to carefully untangle, so SO worth it. I like to keep things original whenever possible. I undid the braided section that was safety pinned onto her head and separated and divided everything into 2 even sets for ponytails.

I reserved one section for making a base for the wig. I crocheted a long chain and pinned and hand stitched it into place on her head.

Then I put the lengths of hair into the base to make her wig. There was *just* enough to give her adequate coverage. I would have preferred a little more hair, but she was able to keep her original hair and that's pretty good! She's feeling quite a bit better by now! She had a bath too.

Here she is all finished! I cleaned her nightgown, it had yellowed a lot with age. I also removed the bottom ruffle and hemmed both edges neatly after removing a rust stained section. I hand ruffled it back on and anchored the snaps on the back closures. She was a very fun project!

Must be something about Fall that makes this the right time for TLC dolls. This year my patients have been Cabbage Patch Kids. I've done a few lately but I wish I had taken more pictures, especially "before" pictures of Curley.

Curley was desperately in need of restoration. She is a vintage Coleco CPK. My friend asked me to fix her up for her daughter. Curley needed just about everything done. Filthy doesn't even begin to describe the doll. I like filthy dolls though, the change in them is very rewarding. She had paint on her face and legs. Lots of ground in dirt and stains in the vinyl of her face and the fabric body. She needed her legs and feet resculpted. Her hair was very matted and pilled. She was a big project, but lots of fun.

I took this picture of her legs after she had been cleaned and after I had started resculping her legs. She only had 1 knee when she came to me, but I stopped after I sculpted the other knee and took a picture before continuing. There was some damage to one foot where someone had tried to repair her toes in the past.

I spent hours on her hair, separating the individual strands from the matted clumps and clipping the fuzzies from the length of each loop and individual ponytail hairs. I also lightly reblushed her cheeks. Love those violet eyes!
I found this little guy in a bin at Goodwill. I paid $4 for him which is entirely too much considering his condition, but the money goes to charity so I didn't mind. He's a first edition 1983 doll which is lovely, but even more important is that he is a AA fuzzy haired guy. That makes him a little bit hard to find, so I thought he would be worth restoring and perhaps experimenting on. His face was deeply scratched and there was some kind of lipstick or pink grease all over his face. His outfit wasn't very attractive either. I don't think it was an official CPK outfit so it got redonated.
I bought some very fine sand paper called Micro Mesh from the local Lee Valley store. I used this to sand, and sand, and sand and sand etc.. the scratches on his cheeks and nose. Very slowly they were minimized. Some were very deep, but they aren't as noticeable now. I had a vintage CPK boy's romper but it was missing the shirt so I made a replacement for him. I found him a pair of shoes at the flea market and now he is much improved. I still need socks for him, but that can wait.
I love the reactions from my family when a TLC doll comes into the house, mostly because I know I can fix them. They are often very dirty and gross looking and my husband responds accordingly. I can't even describe, it's just an "ewwww" kind of a face. Until last week, Curley had been the grossest doll to arrive here, and look how nicely she cleaned up! When this little baby was dropped off last weekend I took it out of the bag and my six year old got this disgusted look on his face. He was caught by surprise, not expecting anything like this. He started backing up looking quite horrified. "Oaaugh! WHAT IS that?!" he said. "It's a Cabbage Patch kid, a preemie" I said. This one needed more than a bath. Major surgery was in order.

Baby's hands had been sucked on by the owner when she was little. I could see where repairs had been done in the past. At one point someone used fishing line to fix the hands because it's so water resistant. Both thumbs had holes in them and the hands were in really awful shape. This one takes the cake for being the most in need of help so far.

My camera didn't really capture how dirty this poor baby is here.
Once I had made a plan for the hand restoration I had to remove the
arms and the hand stitching. I gave her another bath to get the hands
as clean as I could. It's much more effective when taken apart.
I pressed the arms flat, inside out and restitched making them jsut a tiny bit smaller in the hand area so I could minimize the worn fabric and get rid of the big holes in the thumbs. I took this picture after I had removed the bad parts. There is still some wear present, but it's a huge improvement.

They are each a bit different and I will have to draft a pattern for 3 of them. I started this evening with a pattern for one of them and it will be a start for another. I used some swim suit fabric that I have in abundance, I like it when a muslin can be useful. I am quite happy with how this came out, hopefully my friend likes it too!
We are also crafting a butterfly here. We found a "mourning cloak" (at least that's what we think it is) caterpillar on the way home from school. The boys and I set up a nice habitat in a giant mason jar. Lo and behold, this morning the caterpillar had assumed the "J" position. In about 2 weeks we will have a butterfly to release at the beach.
I think it suits her and she fits in well among other Twinns in the world.

My Twinns have an armature inside that makes them posable. Their elbows don't bend because their vinyl goes up to about where their bicep would be, but their shoulders and upper arms can move. This is where the cloth body and the armature begins. Most summer dresses for these dolls have longer than usual short sleeves, I guess to cover the transition from vinyl to cloth. I wanted this dress to just barely cover the join, as I like a short sleeve dress to have short sleeves. I'm not a fan of those really long "short sleeves."
I love this doll's wig. It's very high quality, thick and soft.
My older boy is very popular among girls, even girls at schools he no longer attends. Last week he got another birthday party invite from a former classmate. Thank goodness for the Oliver+S Popover Sundress pattern. It makes such a cute little dress and is a nice gift. It's so cute in fact, that my younger son took one look at the dress and admitted that he wanted to try it on. I let him, but he's tiny and it was too big. He still loved it though, so I'm plotting how to make him a tunic or something he could actually wear for the summer.

This is one of three t-shirts I made for Inky. I procrastinated for a full year before finally making them. The fabric I was sent was paper thin, actually thinner than paper, very stretchy and very picky to sew. I am glad to have finished these shirts. I was joking around before I started them that it had taken a year to teach myself to cry Unicorn tears in order to conjure the magic that I needed to get the job done. Once I got started it wasn't quite so difficult, but I am still glad they are finished. Davina is modeling in the picture, please pardon her half done fishtail braids 'do. Thank you Colette, for being so patient :)
This is our bunny, Nutters. He is wild but he lives in our backyard. I call him Nutters because he is fearless. He's set up a little nest right beside our swingset, and he's not scared of the kids, the lawnmower or anything. I was cutting the grass again today and he just hopped off the grass and watched me mow from the garden. There is a neighborhood cat who has about a 3 bunny/week habit so I hope Nutters is smart enough to be scared of him.
I had been writing a raglan sleeve cardigan pattern for dolls at the time so it worked out well. This is the finished result, I just happened to have the perfect colored tiny buttons.

This is a little underwear set. I was sent three pair of new Gymboree unders to make into a raglan sleeve boyshorts set. Voila! The back of the shirt closes with snaps. I used a scrap from an outgrown Gymboree shirt from my kids for the white on the shirt to make up the full front piece. The unders just weren't big enough to get lots of large pieces out of. Upcycling can be like a puzzle. Trying to get the most mileage out of whatever shapes are available, and then make it look like it's designed that way. The back of the shirt is solid pink. Davina had been sitting in this set for a couple days so the fronts of the boyshorts are creased, oops!
We got the invite after school on Wednesday and the party was on Saturday. I bought some fabric on Thursday and made the dress on Friday. Molly begged me for a dress too, claiming that I never sew anything for her. O rly?

This is for Luan, my older son's friend. It was so sweet of her to invite him. He changed to a different school on the fall but she still asks about him frequently. My younger son still goes to the same school she does, so I see her and her mom quite a bit.

A quick popover sundress
I love it, well I loved it. It became very worn but I wasn't able to find the same style to replace it with. It's just the right size and the pockets are just so etc. It hit me the other day that I would like to replicate that purse and incorporate the Club Nintendo bag that I got with some coins. It was a decent basic bag but it always felt so...flimsy. I looked at it more like fabric for harvesting. I carefully took apart my worn out Vera Bradley purse and made a pattern from it. I dug through my fabric stash and found some bits that would coordinate decently with the Nintendo bag. And.. voila! I have a new one of a kind purse. I still need to bind the seam allowances in the interior but it's fit for sharing pictures as is. I can't even count how many layers there are in the seams inside this purse. I had to quilt three layers of different fabrics together to make the sturdiness, just as Vera Bradley purses are made. 1 layer each of canvas, flannel and twill. This was not a project for wimps. I couldn't have done it without my trusty vintage Singer.

This is the original bag. It looks decent in the picture, but trust me, it's all frayed and there are holes in it.

This was the Club Nintendo bag. I got it from doing reviews on games and stuff that we had purchased, it's like a little reward. It's a very simple bag. It had no shape and was awkward to carry. It was destined to be upcycled.

Here is a glimpse of the carnage. When I sew, nothing else gets done in the house. Ask my kids. :) Ask my husband. :) Luckily none of them complain if the dishes pile up or we go out for dinner because nobody wants to eat the sewing I've been busy working on instead of cooking.

And here's my new purse! I reused the cord from the inside of the original cording, I made the red cording out of twill. I also reused the strap hardware, so I have a nice adjustable strap like on the original. I also reused the stiff rectable of cardboard for the liner in the bottom so the bag holds it's shape. The only thing I purchased for making this was the $1.50 zipper.

It was difficult to get right up close to the cording through all those heavy layers. I may go back in and snug it up in a few places, but I figured this was suitable enough for pictures.
The back. I really like the little side pockets. I never really used them much, but they give the purse a finished look.

The inside has one side with pockets. My 3DS fits in one, and my phone fits in the other large one with room for a pen and bus tickets in the middle one. The bottom of the purse is large and flat, it can hold a lot of stuff, but the top of it is only as wide as the zipper so it's not bulky to carry at all. Oh look, I have Streetpass, :)

Just one more picture of one of the side pockets.
Thanks for looking! I will have some doll stuff to show you soon. I hope you all have a good weekend and a Happy Easter!
P.S. my 6 year old confided in me the other day. He said "Mom, I know the Easter bunny isn't real. I know it's just a person dressed up in a bunny costume because bunnies can't carry baskets of eggs. That's silly."Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462230155464872978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8530614299928704144.post-30839441191527403642012-03-24T16:49:00.000-05:002012-03-24T16:49:26.412-05:00Knitting!This is a custom cardigan with raglan sleeves. Just a simple one, but the yarn is so lush and the color so lovely. I started it this week, hopefully I can get it finished over spring break. I think the color is really nice on Molly with her grey eyes. I might have to track some of this yarn down to make one for her, too.
I've made a bunch of stuff this year, but I've been so busy hauling kids back and forth to two different schools in opposite directions of home that I have not had a chance to update my blog. Here is some ballet stuff I made:

This little pair of panties, made from a new pair of child size from Gymboree, plus three ballet leotards and skirts. I made some little hair scrunchies from the scraps of the panties but I didn't quite get them finished. Soon :)

Thanks for looking!Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462230155464872978noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8530614299928704144.post-34858735610059391872012-01-02T19:19:00.000-06:002012-01-02T19:19:40.944-06:00Incognito, or a pretty case for video games.I've been working on a little gift for my son's friend, but I'll show you that later. My iron expired last evening resulting in some excitement from the smoke alarm so I had to stop sewing. Yesterday I decided to try making a little zippered case for my new 3DS out of the scraps from the little gift. We have quite a lot of games in the house and I wanted some sort of organized and compact way to store mine. (Kids and hubby each have their own 3DS consoles as well.) When we go out for streetpass at the mall I like to keep them each in something protective so the 4 of them in my backpack aren't getting jostled around or scratched.

So far I've been slipping each one into a mitten but yesterday I did some measuring and came up with this. I just used materials that I had on hand, so the zipper is a tiny bit short but it seems to work fine. I centered it but I'm glad for the long tails at either end. The body of the case has a layer Timtex in between the lining and the outer fabric. This is lightweight but stiff so it protects. It's sort of like very dense stiff but thin felt. It doesn't like to be creased..

It fits the 3DS exactly and I made little pockets in the lining of the lid that hold 6 games plus a flap with 6 more pockets so it can hold 12 games at the same time as the console.

This shows the underside of the flap, and the additional pockets.

With the flap laying flat. These are Henry Glass fabrics.

This is what it looks like when it's full and zipped closed. I'm quite happy with it for a first try. The Timtex was a little tough to work with. I think I'll try something different next time, maybe just a piece of polar fleece would be fine but I do like the stiffness of the Timtex.
This has been my baby for the last couple of weeks. Just ask my family :) Nothing else gets done when I'm sewing... The party is tonight and I'm excited to wear my dress. I've always wanted to make my own dress for the holiday party. I was lucky enough to visit the Mall of America in October with my husband. I got to see the Bettie Page shop and Betsey Johnson. Lots of inspiration there, some of it was really over the top which isn't quite my style. That's the nice thing about sewing, I can recreate what I like and make it suit my own taste without spending $500+.
The bodice is Chinese brocade. Gathered cap sleeves with mandarin collar. I made the belt, it's just wide elastic with a belt clasp. The skirt (attached) is taffeta. I used all of my fray check going around the edges of the brocade immediately after I had cut each piece. This worked really well, I could actually touch it without it combusting into shreds. The crinoline is 4 tiers of tulle. The bottom tier is close to 20m in length. I should really bind the bottom edge with more black ribbon but I totally underestimated how much ribbon I was going to need. Another day I will finish it off since I'm sure I will wear this under dresses again. Everyone needs a crinoline, right? Just watch, I'll be the only person tonight with one.. Everyone else will be jealous :)
We're all so excited, especially the kids. We got Nana something special, it's a suprise and she reads my blog so I can't tell you here. Grandpa doesn't visit my blog so it's ok to share this one. Plus, I made it! I franken-patterned a bit for him. He has really long arms so jackets and shirts off the rack rarely have enough length in the sleeves. So, I thought since we got something awesome for Nana, that Grandpa should get something awesome too. I really hope this fits, I got my mom to measure something that does fit so it should work out OK. He walks a lot with the dogs and he needs pockets for dog treats, and the ever essential poop bags.

The perfect fit fleece jacket. I hope!
It's forest green, hard to photograph accurately at night. The body is lined with the grey knit but the sleeves are not. This should work well for the climate they live in.
I've also been busily working on my holiday dress for the dinner and dance at the convention center. Chinese brocade, taffeta and lots and lots of tulle :)Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462230155464872978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8530614299928704144.post-86566212357480988102011-11-05T16:41:00.001-05:002011-11-05T19:33:28.285-05:00A few things for CaitieMy Twinn dolls are about 24" tall. They can't wear the same clothes as American Girls at all so I had to draft some pants and things for Caitie to wear. I made up my basic 4 pocket pants in her size. I also made her a little interlock knit cardigan and some slippers. I haven't yet decided what kind of closure to put on the cardigan, maybe buttons? I can't put in a zipper because I didn't put facings in it.
Yes, she's wearing her pajama shirt under the cardigan. I haven't made her a regular shirt yet.
Slippers! She came without any shoes or socks and I bought her some baby socks but they were way wrong. So I knit her some wool slippers and cut out some leather soles. My husband has a handy little tool for punching holes in leather that made these an easier project. I made holes all around each sole and stitched them onto the socks with DMC pearle cotton floss.
She was in need of some help and the bidding didn't seem competitive. I put in a low bid at the last minute and to my surprise I actually won her. I thought for sure someone would bid in the last seconds but nope.. So, this is Caitie, she lives here now. My Twinn has over 40 face molds that they use/have used and collectors have given them names to help identify who is who. This one is called Caitie, it seems to suit her.

I fixed her broken neck, reglued her eyelashes back on, washed her hair, cleaned the paint off her face and limbs etc. She was in pretty sad shape, although it was all very easy to fix.

I took this picture before I cleaned her but after I had fixed her neck. Her head was hanging just by the cloth of her body covering. The lighting washed out the paint on her face but she had many spots where she'd been bumped on a wall or furniture and picked up some paint. magic eraser took care of 95% of these. She still has a couple of faint marks on her chin and near her mouth but I'll have another go at those soon.

She arrived in a pair of My Twinn baby underwear, and some velvety blue overalls with snowflakes on them. I drafted up a pants and shirt pattern for her yesterday. I made a muslin of the shirt that turned out nice for pajamas. I will tweak the pattern before I make a daytime shirt. The pants pattern still needs work but I was able to make a pajama pants pattern today. This turned out really well, so now she has a pair of good pajamas and I've got a better foundation for pants.
They look blue on my computer screen but in real life they are almost violet. She's a very high quality doll. This particular doll is from the time when the dolls were assembled in Denver by artisans. My Twinn has gone under twice, and the first time they were bought out by a company that was in over their head. Production went over to China and quality and customer service were severely lacking from what I've heard. The current owners seem to have a good handle on things and the quality of the dolls is once again very good. I really like how poseable the dolls are, though I wish their arms could bend closer to the elbow like how their knees bend. I guess they had to choose how much cloth to have on the arm because that relates to how much mobility they have. The vinyl goes up to just past the elbow so everything from that point down is stationary though they have motion in their shoulders. The armature inside the body lets the head tilt, bend at the waist, hips, knees etc. even the feet can move a bit.

I left the window open and my 5 year old son was in love with what he saw. He wanted to buy one, but they are very expensive for what they are. I offered to make him one and he was delighted. He chose the body shape and the face design that he liked and I set to work on it today. Luckily I had everything on hand to make this for him, just how he wanted it. What are the odds? Together we drafted the pattern and traced it onto the black fleece. While he was at school I hand stitched the face in place and machine stitched the mouth.

The sun washed this picture out.
These colors are more accurate. I think the red dots in the eyes need to be larger, I can do this while he's at school tomorrow.
The boys had swimming lessons this evening at the Y. He insisted on bringing his new friend along to play in the playstructure before his lesson. A little girl he was playing with came up to me and we had a little conversation.
"Did you really make that for him?"
"Yes, I did."
"Wow! Can you show my mom how to make those?"
"Well...."

I thought that was pretty sweet. Anyways, I'm happy with how it turned out. I can't believe they charge $50 for these. It surprised me how simple it was to make. Thanks for looking!Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462230155464872978noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8530614299928704144.post-83072480549188884672011-09-15T09:51:00.000-05:002011-09-15T09:51:07.817-05:00King size duvet cover and other things.I've been busy lately! Not all sewing but definitely some. It all started with a clean spot, isn't that always the way? I steam cleaned the carpet in the basement, and that led to painting the faux wood paneling. I've been itching to paint the basement since we bought this house 6 years ago. It's an old house and we've been picking away at renovating/improving each room over the years. Now that the boys are both in school again I have had some time to work on bigger things. My youngest is only away for 2 hours each afternoon, but I can still get some work done. He and my husband went away for the weekend and my oldest and I worked on the paneling. It had to be washed with TSP, primed with bullseye 123 and then painted. It's a lot of walls to do, and we have some furniture dowstairs so I had to work around stuff. There is still 1 corner left to do, it's my sewing area, plus a fake rock looking wall that will get a different treatment. So, this is phase 1 of updating a very dated basement living space. I'm not much of a decorator, but we'll be going to Ikea in a couple of weeks. Maybe I'll find some good things there to cozy up this playroom/tv area and the sewing side.

I think we need a long/lowish bookcase along the wall under the window.

The door to the furnace/sewing room. I still need to put the ceiling panel back up. Shaw was here hooking up cable and they needed access in there. I know, the couches are icky. We have 2 little boys... You can see the rock wall here. I'm going to paint it light grey, then let it dry before rubbing dark grey into the grooves.
The door to the laundry/utility room. I've since finshed painting the door/trim and replaced the doorknob. To the left is my sewing area. I think I will paint it very light blue.
A few days ago we were shopping and I found a good deal on a nice king size sheet set. I washed them yesterday and put them on the bed. We don't use a flat sheet so I went to put the dark brown sheet into the closet with the other linens and then I had an idea. The new sheet coordinated nicely with the old one that we had never used so I thought I should sew them together to make a duvet cover. I sewed three sides together and threw it on the bed. It looked perfect! Until last night we each had our own blanket since we didn't have a king size duvet. The bed was always a mismatch of a queen size quilt and a twin size boy themed duvet cover. We were at Costco last night and found a really nice king size wool duvet for a great price. It fits perfectly into the duvet cover I made out of the flat sheets. I had left the bottom open so I could close it up at the right length. I measure it against the duvet and then sewed 2/3 of the bottom closed. Presto! A coordinated grown-up bed set. After 12 years, this is our first matched set.
I used the tops of the sheets as the top edges of the cover. There is an embroidered strip across the top of the front and the back that coordinated with the pillow cases
When I first saw her online early in August I wasn't sure about her facemold. It's different, and new. And it grew on me. I think she has a finer featured, more delicate version of the Josefina mold. Welcome to the Dynamite household, Marie-Grace. Of course, it wouldn't be a warm welcome without some new duds. While I waited for her to arrive I made her an outfit with Addy's patterns. I made a couple of minor changes for her.

I couldn't wait to get her out of her Barbie pink dress. Didn't even bother to take pictures in it, sorry AG. It's a nice enough dress, but Marie-Grace is much happier in her new skirt and blouse. I'd like to make her a bonnet and little jacket to go with this, but I'll have to go shopping for supplies. I made the blouse and skirt with things from my stash. She is wearing her crinoline and chemise as well. My kids got a kick out of looking up her skirt last night. Boys!
Addy's school blouse pattern calls for a stand up collar, but I changed it to this style. I put tiny scallops along the outer edge and handstitched the front in place. I like collars to stay put on dolls.
It's right around the corner for us here in Manitoba. My youngest is going into kindergarten and he asked that I make him a new backpack. I was happy to oblige, the Oliver + S book "Little things to sew" has a sweet penguin backpack pattern. He loves it! It was not hard to make though I'm glad I had my faithful vintage singer to sew through those layers of heavy denim. Up to 14 layers at times. Like butta, every single time. Sorry plastic computerized Kenmore, you're just not cut out for this. Thanks for the occasional zigzag though.

The dark grey body of the backpack is an upcycled pair of Grandpa's jeans. I used the wrong side facing out so it's not so obviously black denim and also gives it a softer look. My son picked out the cows for the lining and the yellow for the beak and the feet. The tummy pocket is a scrap from the box. I satin stitched around the pocket, I like it this way. The buttons are vintage. He loves his new backpack. I'll take some more pictures of him modeling later but for now here it is.

The cows inside. The lining is hand stitched along the zipper. There is a pocket in here for pencils too, but it's on the inside front so you can't see it.
The straps are adjustable, it should fit over his winter coat fine. The black strap adjusters are from Mountain Equipment Co-op. Luckily they had the exact size I needed.
Thanks for looking!Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462230155464872978noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8530614299928704144.post-8935683497835817222011-08-21T10:01:00.000-05:002011-08-21T10:01:24.378-05:00Farmhouse doll bed

My husband built me this bed with plans available for free from Ana-White.com. These are really nice plans, it makes a good sized doll bed. Some people think it's too wide, but it's just right to me. I dislike doll beds that are only as wide as the doll. How many people have a bed that narrow, really? Plus, more width = more room for decorative pillows and a square quilt.

We decided to paint it, after the holes were filled and sanded. My 5 year old picked this nice blue color. In this picture it's got a coat of primer and the first coat (of four) of blue paint. It's quite a rich color and I'm debating another coat and whether or not I should varathane it. My little guy is a keen helper so he got a birdhouse from the craft store to paint along with me.

For now, it has a 2" mattress cut from foam, and little sheet to cover it. I think I will box the corners and put elastic around to make it a proper fitted sheet. There is a seam across the middle of the sheet because it's the scraps left from the quilt. There is a plywood base under the mattress too. It's very sturdy.

I also made a quilt and two regular pillows. Most of the fabrics used was scraps from the last few months of sewing. The bed was also made of scraps from the garage. Scraps are cost effective but not time efficient. My husband had to rip 2x4 lumber into 1x3 and 1x2 etc. The only things purchased for this were the paint/primer and the foam for the mattress. Up next will be a flat sheet, two pillow cases and a decorative pillow or two.
She brought with her my great grandmother's antique Singer treadle. It was in need of some restoration, but overall in nice condition. My mom, husband and I worked together to restore it as best we could. It had 108 years of dust and goo on it.

This picture is of the assisted lift assembly that folds the machine down into the lid and helps lift it out when the lid is open. Very very dirty.

Some of the pieces here, the top of the lid, the drawer "baskets" and a couple of the drawers. Notice how dark the drawer faces are. Almost black. Grandma was a smoker.

The rest of the parts. My husband took off everything for a proper refinish. My mom restored all of the wood. She is amazing! On the chair are the other 2 drawers, a piece of the top and the wide drawer. Under the glass table is the large top piece and the small top piece. The box looking piece is the one that holds the sewing machine when it is folded down.

Craig was so careful taking everything apart. Great job!

Most of the pieces are here, looking lovely and ready to be reassembled. My mom stripped off the old finish, then stained and varnished everything.

I repainted the gold details on the iron stand.

The top piece, it was water damaged at some point. The dark part gets covered by the machine surround pieces.

Lady Laura herself, a Singer 27-4 from 1903. Originally my great grandmother's (Laura Parker,) then my grandma and my mom, now mine. Even my boys have sewn a bit on this making 5 generations of use. Craig got her running right away and she's lovely. A new treadle belt is on the way, but the original works somewhat.

All finished, isn't she beautiful! We cleaned all the brass handles, screws, hinges etc with brasso. It's amazing what came off those. I can see myself doing a lot of quilting by this window in the winter. It's North facing so we get light but not direct light. Perfect.
The drawers were so dark that none of these details were visible before. I wish I had taken better before pictures. It's truly been an amazing restoration, and so nice that we all did it together.
Thank you so much for reading and looking at all of these pictures. I hope I've inspired some of you to find and restore/use your family's treadle. There are so many out there that need love and this is the perfect time of year for refinishing. Don't put it off any longer.Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462230155464872978noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8530614299928704144.post-61485638763035467832011-07-27T11:07:00.001-05:002011-07-27T13:26:26.972-05:00Little black dressAs some of you know, I lost 60 lbs in 2009. Since then my wardrobe has been..lacking. A lot. I'm not normally one to have a lot of clothes anyhow, but I literally had nothing to wear this summer aside from a pair of shorts from last summer and 3 t-shirts that I bought a couple of weeks ago. I made a couple of little beach dresses to get myself through the heat wave, I'll blog those later but this week I made something more practical. A little black dress, suitable for just about any occasion. My husband and I are celebrating 10 years of marriage next week and I wanted to have something nicer to wear than my jeans or those shorts from last summer. Enter Lisette patterns to the rescue. This is 2246, the Traveller dress. View A but with view C short sleeves. It's pretty much the perfect dress. It's hard to see the pocket details because of the print but I'm positive I will make at least 1 more of these for my empty closet.I bought this fabric from the clearance section as a muslin but I really love it. It's a high quality cotton so it launders beautifully. This was my first time making this pattern, but I've discovered I'm a perfect 10 in Lisette fitting. (Sewing pattern sizes are not the same as retail size, I'm a 4 in that sense.) The red tie belt is some scrap I had leftover from Hazel's Little Red Riding hood cape so it's twill.
I've finished a bunch of popover sundresses, a couple more tea party sundresses (I remade the red topped one) and I've been experimenting making a ruffled halter like the Oliver+S one for girls. They do not have this pattern available for dolls so I've been making one of my own. It's coming along, the fit is good. I will post more pictures later once everything is dry and pressed. I wash everything I make because there is usually washable marker colors here and there on everything. I don't use a dressmaker's pencil or chalk. I like my kids' Crayola markers because I know they will always wash out and I can choose the right color so it's always visible.
I just wanted to share this picture of these little hangers on my clothesline tonight. Some are for friends, teacher gifts, birthday etc. The rest are for my dolls.
I'm leading a sewalong on a doll forum so more people can make this lovely Oliver+S dolly dress. I made up my example dress last evening and took lots of photos. I won't bore you with all those pictures, but I will share a few of my favorites.

This is the finished dress. Hannah is the doll I bought in NYC in April, she is a #37. Her green eyes and ginger hair are just right with these colors.

I wanted to try flat felling a tiny seam allowance and the side seams of this dress were just right for testing it out. It was a bit fiddly but it worked well. Not necessarily practical for all the time, but still nice to know it can be done. The fold in the fabric at the foot is 1/8" wide. Vintage machines were made for this kind of work.

I like being able to see where I am going when I sew something close to the edge. See the bias strip around the underarm here? I can get very close to the edge and keep it consistent because I can see. Vintage machines were made for this. If you're not sold on these by now I don't know what else to say. It's a very different but super enjoyable way to sew. I can't go back to my computerized kenmore for sewing. Winding bobbins and making 1 step automatic buttonholes sure, but not for stuff like this.

I'll be making a few more doll dresses soon. I think they will be nice end of year gifts for school friends, and a few of my dolls could use some summer wear. I'd love to see some popover dresses made by my readers.
Thanks for reading and have a lovely weekend!Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462230155464872978noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8530614299928704144.post-47295275761509789522011-06-22T14:23:00.000-05:002011-06-22T14:23:22.018-05:00A vest for my boy and a popover sundress for dolls. My son had a field trip to the zoo today. He requested an explorer vest like his little brother's for the occasion. I made it yesterday and washed it last night. Unfortunately it was raining today so the zoo trip was cancelled and they went to a movie instead. He wore his vest anyway, you never know when a pterosaur might be spotted up in the sky. His is a size large. I bound the armholes in teh same plaid as the smaller one but the inside is light blue plaid from another upcycled shirt. The buttons are mismatched, but close enough, vintage. I made the bellows option again, I think those really make this a good vest for an older child. My son is 7.5.
I forgot to take a picture of the inside of the doll tea party sundress the other day. This shows the tiny french seams of the 1/4" allowance and the red detail inside the hem. This is understitched and it was supposed to be blindstitched in place by hand but I was impatient so I just used a straight stitch.
This is the Oliver+S popover sundress for dolls. It's a free pattern available to all. I'd love to see any you make, friends. Post your blog or link to pictures here in the comments. I made 3 of these today from remnants of the Koi fish ice cream dress I made a while back. I think it might be handy to have a coordinating doll dress if the whoever gets the dress also has a doll. My son's little friends at school are at the age where they are getting AG dolls for their birthdays. So, we are ready for the next party. It's nice to have a gift ready to go. This dress is for Davina, my #4. It's her turn to get some new dresses. It's raining here today so she's got her wellies on.
